Love’s Patient Fury by SusanWard
Four Stars ****
Book Review by Nicole McCurdy
I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give the third book in SusanWard’s historical romance series. Although the writing is just as incredible and emotive as with her previous escapades into the lives of Varian Deverell and his now wife Merry I feel there was something slightly lacking in Love’s Patient Fury. The danger and intrigue was still present as Deverell’s mysterious persona is finally exposed and indeed what his main agenda has been all along, what I didn’t particularly care for was the way pregnant Merry was continually hurt or seemingly manipulated in situations that could have been clarified yet she was allowed to believe the worst in things, all for the greater good and the great cause of retribution for past sins that others committed against her husband. The wilful and spirited Merry from previous events is gone and transformed into a meek pregnant duty bound wife while Varian continues to seek vengeance.
The passion and ferocity involved in their fledgling marriage is there in abundance but I sometimes felt there was little substance to it as I couldn’t get a good insight inside Varian’s head to what his motives where or what he was thinking but thankfully further on he begins to fight for Merry a bit harder becoming more demonstrative of his emotions which was a turning point in the novel for me. Another lovely little touch was Merry’s discovery of Varian’s letter to her that he penned whilst they had both been in America it gave a telling insight into how he saw his wife even then.
“There is nothing in my heart but you, Merry. You fill it so completely I can see nothing on this earth but you. Everything I have done since my eyes first touched you, I have done for you.”
I loved the two previous books in Susan Ward’s series there was never any shortage of adventure and drama and a never ending supply of questions and problems that needed answering or solving but I feel Love’s Patient Fury was a book that simply ties up all the loose ends and gives us the answers to everything we’ve been pondering about since book one and two including Rensdale’s involvement and Varian’s secret revenge plot.
“In my pursuit to uncover Rensdale’s crimes, I had cause to run across each of these men. We each held a piece, knowing not in true what it was we were investigating. Together our pieces formed a clear picture. We’ve been working together ever since.”
The first half of the book was a bit of a slow mover for me as we got to know more of Merry’s family and the dynamics surrounding them, however the second half was more exciting as all things came to an explosive conclusion. With the reappearance of Indy, kidnapping, collusion, betrayal and gunshots adding a dramatic and thrilling thread through it all the pace picked up considerably.
I was so excited to get my hands on this book and I’m glad I was able to see it all through to the end. Susan has a way of trapping you inside her words, ringing the emotion out of you and tossing you out again at the end feeling like you’ve been on a wild quest for justice and love and peace. Her writing as I’ve said before is impeccable and the dialogue interesting and authentic to the time period so you’re able to fully immerse yourself in the story. It was a great finale to Varian and Merry’s epic tale and I would certainly recommend reading all three books so you can fully appreciate how beautifully it concludes. Next up is Indy’s own story due out next Summer and you can guarantee I’ll be first in line for that book.

I've written 26 books in 25 years. I write contemporary romance novels about messed up rich girls with perfect looking lives & naughty little souls and the hot mercurial men they take captive...and on occasion messed up rich girls from exciting periods in US and British history, and the poor Lords and Pirates they hold under their spell.
