Freedom
By: S.A. Wolfe
Synopsis
Dylan Blackard is back in town and certain everyone knows his secrets.
Putting away his notorious reputation as the wild guy with a womanizing past, he’s now on a new path, wanting to be the good guy his brother can stop worrying over. As long as he gives up his old vices—including women—he can keep himself on the straight and narrow and finally live up to everyone’s expectations.
However, obsessing about his lack of self-control is making Dylan one humorless, cranky hermit. That all changes, though, when his brother hires a new employee, the stunning Emma Keller, who will be sharing an office with him and all of his tightly wound nerves.
Emma, a spunky young woman from New Jersey, isn’t about to feel sorry for Dylan and his situation. She is beyond distracting to him, and that is enough to turn his emotional balancing act upside down. Not only is she intelligent, and a smart aleck, she's also very determined to pull the sexy Dylan Blackard out of his self-imposed isolation.
From the moment he meets her, he feels alive again, but Emma doesn’t come as a gift with a pretty bow; she comes with major baggage—a family embedded in its own tumultuous history.
Will Emma be the tipping point that causes Dylan to regress into his past destructive behaviors…or will he actually pursue her for keeps?

Author Interview
Thank you for taking time out to talk with us.
What inspired you to become a writer?
When I was eight, I read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I absolutely loved the voice of Scout. I think that planted the seed. Also, as a kid, I loved Judy Blume and Stephen King books. Then I started reading my parents’ books, whatever I could get my hands on. So I was heavily influenced by Anne Tyler, Amy Tan, And John Irving. I never read a romance novel until a few years ago when a friend gave me one of Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander books. That inspired me to switch from writing mainstream fiction (which is unpublished) to romance.
Can you tell us a little about your recent release Freedom?
Well, I never actually intended to write a series. I thought Fearsome was done, and I was knee deep in another novel when readers told me they wanted more about Dylan, one of the critical characters in Fearsome. So I dropped what I was writing, and decided to give Dylan a full story and his own HEA.
Both Dylan and Emma are based on real people from my life, and I wanted to address a serious subject in the plot because it is a crucial part of Dylan’s life. However, I wanted to infuse the story with plenty of humor since that’s how many people, especially my family, have been able to deal with such a tough issue.
Basically, Dylan is coming to terms with his mental illness and what he has to do to stay healthy, and at the same time, Emma is thrown into his world and brings her own problems into the mix. In a way, they are both being tested, but they are a very good match. I like that neither is perfect, and they both show their human, irrational sides at times while they strive to be together.
Are you planning on any more books in this series?
I think I’m writing it now. These characters won’t go away. When I get an idea in my head that seems to be on track, it keeps evolving daily even if I’m not writing it down. It gets to the point where I have trouble sleeping at night because the character dialogue takes over my brain - that’s when I know I have a story and it’s time to sit down and write it.
So the answer is yes. I’m working on another book in the Fearsome series because right now Cooper and Imogene are the loudest people in my head. They are practically screaming for me to get their story down.
If you could write with any author who would it be and why?
There are so many wonderful romance authors today. I’d love to work with any that would like to collaborate on writing a hot romance with both witty dialogue and a dramatic aspect that perhaps hasn’t been used or can be told in unique way.
What was the hardest/easiest part of writing your book?
In Freedom, the hardest part was the easiest part and vice versa. Dylan’s character was especially easy to write because he is a composite of my brothers, so I used what I know. It was also very emotional to write because the material is very real, and it’s very fresh in my mind.
Both of my brothers were diagnosed as bipolar, one is happily married with young children, the other committed suicide as a young adult. Their journeys were quite different and I tried to convey that in Freedom. There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment, but there also doesn’t need to be a stigma attached to the diagnosis, and I hope that came across in the story.
Do you listen to music while reading or writing?
Lyrics tend to disrupt my thoughts when I’m writing, so I listen to soundtracks. Lately, I’ve been listening to the theme music of Vikings (If I Had A Heart) for hours on end while I write. I also listen to the soundtracks from the movies: Last of the Mohicans, Pride & Prejudice (2005 version), and Revolutionary Road.
When I read, I don’t listen to music at all.
Describe in 5 words, your writing?
Romantic, sexy, witty, happy, engaging.
What are you currently reading?
I just downloaded Mud Vein to my Kindle, so I’ll start that tonight.
Do you have a nickname?
My husband has various nicknames for me and I hate them all! Otherwise, no.
If you were trapped on an island, what 5 things would you take with you?
My husband and my two children (I’d put them on the other side of the island.), a solar-powered phone/tablet (so I could have music, reading, and communication), and a solar-powered flat iron because I hate frizzy hair.
Are you currently working on any projects?
Fearsome #3 (untitled)
Another novel not related to Fearsome (untitled)
